Disallowing a URL encoded period ("%2E") in the URL is more secure, as they are frequently used to bypass security constraints. It could f.e. facilitate Directory Traversal Attacks. Spring Security by default sets StrictHttpFirewall#setAllowUrlEncodedPeriod to false.
